This week Marisa joined a panel of experts, including the vice-chancellor, at the Centre of Sustainability, part of the University of Surrey to discuss the environmental challenges we face as a nation and a county. Chaired by Former Italian Minister of State for Education, University and Research and political economist Professor Lorenzo Fioramonti, the panel discussed the work they are doing to meet net zero and place the UK as the leading country for education around sustainability.
Marisa spoke about why environmental action is a natural fit with conservative values and highlighted some of the work she is doing as Surrey Cabinet lead. It was also a good opportunity to hear from the academic audience on their research projects and forthcoming papers.
Following this session, Marisa headed to Royal Holloway, University of London, to join a discussion in the Centre of Management on working together to get to net zero and how local authorities, academia and business can deliver together.
There participants included those from other political parties challenging each other on their policy and their vision for the environment. Marisa set out the ambition within Surrey County Council and the fact the delivery plan objectives are being met. She spoke about the initiatives from decarbonising homes in low income households to the re-wilding of Surrey countryside and how the university is a key partner in the work to get to net zero.
