As the Parliamentary Candidate for Dorking and Horley, I am acutely aware of the critical issues surrounding sewage, flooding, and water management that affect our communities. It is imperative to keep you, the residents, informed about the proactive steps being taken to address these concerns. Here’s a comprehensive update on my actions and future plans, aimed at ensuring a sustainable and healthy environment for us all.
Formation of a Utility Task Group at Surrey County Council
Recognising the need for a structured approach to dialogue with utility providers, I've been instrumental in establishing a Utility Task Group at Surrey County Council, in collaboration with Jonathan Hulley, Chairman of the relevant select committee. Our objective is to enhance communication with entities such as Thames Water, pushing for transparency and prioritisation of our community's needs. The initial meeting in January set a positive tone for future engagements, promising more constructive discussions ahead.
Responsive Measures to Sewage Overflow in Horley
The unacceptable sewage overflow at Horley Sewage Works prompted immediate action. I secured the closure of the affected footpath to protect public health and sent a clear signal to Thames Water about the severity of their environmental breaches. This action was bolstered by the support of Richard Biggs, Leader of Reigate and Banstead Borough Council, who facilitated the necessary signage and barriers.
Strategic Advocacy and Partnership
My commitment extends beyond immediate responses. In collaboration with the Leader of Surrey County Council, I've advocated forcefully to Thames Water, demanding an end to sewage leaks and the acceleration of upgrade works. My engagement with other water suppliers servicing Surrey has fostered productive relationships, addressing a spectrum of issues from infrastructure enhancement and leak prevention to conservation efforts and sustainable water usage.
Lobbying for Increased Local Oversight
A key aspect of my work involves lobbying for greater powers for county councils to oversee utility companies' operations effectively. Addressing road surface damage caused by leaks and the resultant hazardous conditions is a priority. Enhanced local authority could dramatically improve our ability to manage these challenges swiftly and efficiently.
Ongoing Dedication to Environmental Stewardship
I remain unwavering in my dedication to prioritising sewage, flooding, and water management issues. The potential for unlimited fines for pollution underscores the need for collective action and sustained pressure on utility companies. My commitment is to leverage every opportunity to advance our community's interests and environmental health.
I value the support and input of Dorking and Horley residents as we work together in partnership to address these significant challenges. Ensuring our constituency remains a vibrant, safe, and clean place to live is my top priority.
