The UK is ranked 6th out of 145 countries leading in defence. We remain a global player despite many claiming otherwise post-Brexit. We spend over the 2% GDP required of NATO members, unlike many other members. We have also stepped up in support of Ukraine. In my early career in defence, we discussed the emerging threats from Russia and China.
These threats are now real, and while many are unaware, these nations attack us daily through cybercrime and infiltration. They aim to cause civil disruption and chaos within our government systems and, to an extent, they are succeeding. Therefore, I wholeheartedly support increasing our defence spending to 2.5% of GDP — the sooner, the better. I also endorse focusing on developing technology and skills to counteract cyber attacks. I will always support strong defence measures for this nation.
